We are regularly asked questions on the different procedure’s to becoming an MOT tester, whether its becoming a new tester or returning to testing. Below we have provided a guide on some of the more common routes and you can view the full training requirements in Appendix 6 of the MOT Testing Guide.

I have never been a tester before and I want to become a tester
First you must successfully complete: Initial tester training A demo test with the DVSA (within 6 months of the certificate date) Then, to stay active, you must: c) Complete at least 1 full MOT test within a 6 month period. d) Complete CPD and the assessment for every year Following.
What if I don’t complete b)
Your status will not become active and you may be required to complete additional training before a VT8 demo can be completed.
What if I don’t complete c) or d)
I am a qualified tester and I want to add Classes 3 and or 5 to my test group
First you must successfully complete: The additional training for the class you wish to add A full demo test, with the DVSA, including the additional elements from the new test group Then, to stay active, you must: c) Complete at least 1 full MOT test within a 6 month period. d) Complete CPD and the assessment for every year Following.
What if I don’t complete b)
Your status for the new group will not become active and you cannot begin testing for that group.
What if I don’t complete c) or d)
I am a qualified tester but my status has been lapsed for 6 months
To resume testing you must successfully complete: The current years CPD and assessment AND log it competently onto your MTS profile. Additional training may be required A demo test with the DVSA Then, to stay active, you must: d) Complete at least 1 full MOT test within a 6 month period. e) Complete CPD and the assessment for every year following.
What if I don’t complete c) or d)
I am a qualified tester but my status has been lapsed for 2 years
To resume testing you must successfully complete: The current years CPD and assessment . AND log it competently onto your MTS profile. Additional training will be required A demo test with the DVSA Then, to stay active, you must: d) Complete at least 1 full MOT test within a 6 month period. e) Complete CPD and the assessment for every year following.
What if I don’t complete c) or d)
Your status will lapse and you will be suspended from testing until you complete additional training , the current CPD & assessment and/or a VT8 demo
I am a qualified tester but my status has been lapsed for 5 years
First you must successfully complete: Initial tester training A demo test with the DVSA (within 6 months of the new certificate date) Then, to stay active, you must: c) Complete at least 1 full MOT test within a 6 month period. d) Complete CPD and the assessment for every year Following.
What if I don’t complete b)
Your status will not become active and you may be required to complete additional training before a VT8 demo can be completed.
